Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela –

Aer Lingus have a direct service and the flight time is only 1 hour 40 minutes.

The language is Galician. Music is very like Irish and Scottish Celtic music as opposed to Southern Spanish music. The scenery is green and lush with lots of Oak and Eucalyptus trees.

Seafood is in abundance and the speciality dish is Octopus. Daily markets where you can purchase your own fish and certain allocated restaurants will cook for you for €4 if you purchase bread and and a drink there.

I stayed in the Parador Santiago de Compostella, it is a 4 star located beside the town square in the Old Town. It is a 2min walk from the Cathedral and to the Monastery of San Domingos and St. James who is the patron Saint of Tourists.

The first ten pilgrims who finish the “Camino” eat for free in this hotel also.

If the Parador is not available, the Hotel San Miguel is in a great location. It is just outside the city gates of the Old Town, on the French way.

The Rooftops of the Cathedral is worth doing, you must make an appointment though and it costs circa €5. Walking shoes is advisable.

There are lots of shops – clothes, bags, shoes, art and souveniers.

There is no traffic allowed the Old Town unless it is a bus or a taxi carrying luggage.

The bus station is 5 mins from the Old Town and the train station is 10 mins.

Tapas restaurants are very popular and most places give free tasters also.

Recommended Restaurants: -

Casa Marcelo 1 Michelin Star

Petiscos do Cardeal Tapas

A Barrola Restaurant

- If one should want there is a McDonalds in the New Town.
